Letters, papers, and newspaper clippings concerning his life in Washington and his work as a judge. Includes materials in a scrapbook devoted to memorials and tributes from different organizations and individuals after his death. "The Everyday File," 96 letters, in alphabetical order, received during McCrary's service as a cabinet member in Washington, D.C. 11 additional letters similar to those found in "The Everyday File" with pamphlets: "The Electoral Count," a reprint from the Congressional Record, January 25, 1877 and "The Tennessee River Improvement" by Marcus J. Wright, reprinted from the Nashville Daily American, January 24, 1880. Includes McCrary's obituaries in various Kansas City newspapers, funeral memorials, and telegrams of condolences.

George Washington McCrary served as an Iowa lawyer, judge, and elected official. He established a law practice in Keokuk in 1856. He served in the Iowa House from 1857-1860, the Iowa Senate from 1861-1865, and the U.S. House of Representatives from 1869-1877. From 1877-1879, he was Secretary of War under Rutherford B. Hayes. From 1880-1884, he was U.S. Judge of the 8th Judicial Circuit and served as general counsel for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad from 1884-1890. Among ...

Wright, a Memphis, Tennessee lawyer, joined the Confederate army, and became a brigadier general in December 1862. After the war he collected material for the Official Records.
